It is our pleasure to welcome Torture Garden as one of our new Business Members. Torture Garden is the worlds largest Fetish and Body Art Club. Torture Garden events Attract large numbers of people, anything from 800 to 2600 plus at monthly events in various London venues and they now have a massive international following.
We are honoured that they want to have a profile here with us at Fetish Freedom.
Alan Pelling and David Wood founded the club in 1990 Alan’s background was as an alternative club promoter and DJ new to London, David was a conceptual art and film graduate who had been going to fetish clubs since 1984. Together they were bored with the existing retro alternative clubs and suburban style fetish clubs. They wanted to create a new kind of radical alternative fetish club that combined progressive and diverse music together with fashion, stage performances, multiple environments and visuals. since that original concept they have progressed to adding market area’s and hiring great artists to put on amazing performances at their club nights. All of this and more is now incorporated into one fantastic fetish club.
The first time we went to Torture Garden it was a Torture Garden Birthday party in 1995 or 1996 at the Ministry of sound we did not know what to expect we went with a couple of friends, we found that we just loved the diverse fashion and music vibe that was there at the time, we watched Allen doing his thing on the decks and picked up flyers on the way out – now we were hooked.
The next time we went to the Leisure Lounge in London and it was the first time we had been on our own without any friends to back us up. We remember standing in the que a little nervous, it is a big thing going to a fetish club without your mates when you are totally new to it all! We waited patiently in the que and couldn’t help checking out the people – they all looked relatively normal, it was winter and everyone had coats and hats on, we were a little uncertain if we were in the right place at the right venue. Once we got inside we saw people in their fetish outfits and were reassured we were in the right place. We remember having a great night and getting a CD from Alan.
We then discovered that we did not need other people to go with and have been going to fetish clubs for the last 15 years and having a great time. When you stand in the que these days outside a venue you have no doubt you are in the right place in fact you almost think you have entered another world or maybe Beyond Thunderdome from a Mad Max movie!
TG’s multi-dimensional events cater for a huge range of open-minded individuals from young fashionable clubber to alternative arty weirdo including burlesque and cabaret to sophisticated SM bondage types. Providing something for every-body from age 18-60+, sexual orientation and gender are of no significance, you are what you are. All of this mix Creates an environment that accepts and encourages individuals to express themselves and when you see so many different types of people it makes you realise how everyone is an individual and how a fetish club is so different to your normal night club.
The events are now very theatrical and a lot of effort and attention to detail is put in to bring the themes to life.
The last time we attended there was a circus theme with clowns running around performing spontaneously in the crowds and midget’s dressed in top hats and tails riding tiny little tricycles. In another room there was a Burlesque show and I am sure there was a lot of other stuff going on but as usual I was trapped on the dance floor by the excellent music.
